The Protect Illinois Communities Act signed on January 10, 2023, regulates the sale and distribution of assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and other devices in Illinois.
The new law also requires owners of certain firearms, magazines, and ammunition to file an endorsement affidavit by January 1, 2024. This affidavit can be filed through the Illinois State Police.
Though Illinois has issued 2.4 million Firearm Owners Identification cards, the number of assault rifles in Illinois is unknown, and as of early November, only 2,430 individuals have filed affidavits.
Failure to file the endorsement affidavit will be considered a Class A misdemeanor for the first offense, and a Class 3 felony thereafter.
